The Bell Charitable Foundation expects the organizations to which it provides funding to hold themselves out as organizations that do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, marital status, military/veteran status, gender identity and expression, genetic information, or any other basis protected by local, state, or federal law.

Eligible entities must be U.S.-based, tax-exempt, nonprofit organizations as defined in the Internal Revenue Code.

Due to regulatory considerations and the Foundation’s funding focus, the following entities and activities are not eligible for funding from The Bell Charitable Foundation:

  • Nonprofit organizations without a current 501(c)(3) exempt status
  • Political, labor, and fraternal organizations
  • Religious organizations without a secular community designation
  • Individuals
  • Individual sports teams and sports tournaments
  • Trips and travel
  • Contests
  • Festivals and parades
  • Advertising
  • Tickets to events

Grant application and reporting requirements

The Bell Charitable Foundation reviews applications quarterly. The Foundation is supporting nonprofit organizations geographically where altafiber and its entities have a significant presence.

After funding, The Bell Charitable Foundation would like to receive periodic updates on the progress of the program and will work with organizations regarding timing. This will include metrics, photos and feedback from those impacted to gauge the impact made from our grants.

All of these details will be included in our Funding Agreement which will be signed by all involved parties upon receiving funds.

How to apply

The Bell Charitable Foundation hosts grant cycles twice per year.

The application for Health and Wellbeing & Technology grants opens April 1-30.

The application for Economic and Social Mobility & Sustainability grants opens October 1-31.

Steps to Apply for a Bell Charitable Foundation Grant:

  1. Submit a Letter of Intent to our grant administration email at BCF@altafiber.com. LOIs will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
    • LOI should include
      • An executive summary of your organization and the program our grant request is focused on.
      • Request dollar amount
      • Background information about the community’s need for this program
  2. If your LOI is approved, you will then receive application instructions. All applications are due by midnight local time on October 31, regardless of when the LOI has been approved.
  3. Please confirm on the schedule above that it is the correct quarter for your application to be submitted. Applying on time is the best way for your application to be considered and reviewed by our Foundation Board!

    • March 17-28 – LOI submission.
    • April 11 – LOI decisions will be shared on or before this date. If approved, application link and instructions will be shared.
    • April 14 – Spring Application opens for Grant Request Submission.
    • May 2 – All Spring grant applications due at midnight local time.
    • Please be sure to select the correct Pillar Focus Area on your application, as this is how we filter through submissions. ONLY Health & Wellbeing and Technology grants will be reviewed this cycle.
    • First two weeks of June – Funding decisions will be announced
  • Fall: Economic & Social Mobility and Sustainability. See Impact Areas above.
    • August 18-29 – LOI submission.
    • September 12 – LOI decisions will be shared on or before this date. If approved, application link and instructions will be shared.
    • September 15 – Spring Application opens for Grant Request Submission.
    • October 3– All Spring grant applications due at midnight local time.
    • Please be sure to select the correct Pillar Focus Area on your application, as this is how we filter through submissions. ONLY Economic & Social Mobility and Sustainability grants will be reviewed this cycle.
    • First two weeks of November – Funding decisions will be announced.

Steps to Apply for a Bell Charitable Foundation Grant:

  1. Submit a Letter of Intent based on the instructions below. LOIs will be reviewed based on the above schedule.      
    • Please note: 
      • Submissions should be 1-2 pages
      • LOIs should be submitted via email to BCF@altafiber.com with a subject of “LOI – name of organization”
      • Please do not submit LOIs to any other altafiber contact you might have, as they will not be considered or approved.
    • LOI should include
      • Program Executive Summary (including organization’s mission)
      • Requested Dollar Amount
      • Background of Community Need for this program
      • Number of People Served Annually (including demographic and geographic information) and Specific Impact you’ve seen as a result of your services
  2. LOI decisions will be shared on or before the date above. If approved, application link and instructions will be shared.
  3. Application will then open for Grant Request Submission and be due according to the schedule above.
  4. Please be sure to select the correct Pillar Focus Area on your application, as this is how we filter through submissions. Only grants within the stated pillars will be reviewed during each cycle.
